My Blog For... Work

Tuesday Oct. 11th
My workplace is called Choi's Martial Arts and they instruct Taekwondo for recreational purposes. The business is a medium sized one, having two separate schools. My workplace is located in Union City, on Alvarado Blvd and it is a small building in a shopping center. I work with two office staff members, along with two to three masters who work on the mat. My workplace hires graduates from colleges majoring in Taekwondo, and other graduates. Most of the people there have college degrees. The strengths of my workplace are the fact that they are very mellow and the days go smoothly. A weakness perhaps is that they only serve people during the afternoon and evening due to jobs and school. This makes my internship a little hectic.

Tuesday Oct. 18th
My mentor's name is Edward Cao. Their typical day at my workplace is to work in the front office, helping students with paperwork and assisting where needed. They were recommended this position by a friend, who thought they would be a very good fit for the job. His week is very busy since he stays at the school every day of every week from opening time till closing.

At my internship I have a few responsibilities that differ in mindsets. First, I am helping out on the mat in the back, assisting the master with teaching kids about Taekwondo and trying to help them succeed. This part of my job description is very nerve wracking because I have never had to deal with little kids like this. It is very rewarding in the end, since the kids seem to like me and we work well together. This feels really inspiring because I remember when I was a little kid there and I wanted to look good for my master and his assistants. The second part of my job is to help up front in the office, answering questions for parents and newcomers. This role is quite easy because I get to interact with adults, which I find myself to be in a stronger position handling. I do whatever my mentor tells me to do, which means I have a smooth flowing day usually.

Tuesday Nov. 1st
For my project, I am thinking of writing a manual for new students who come and sign up for our program. This booklet will help students figure out our curriculum, as well as different tips and facts about the school. I am excited to do this project because when I was a student at Choi's Martial Arts, I felt lost and needed extra help regarding certain topics. For my project to be successful, I need to write a 40 page book for students with varying age groups by Dec. 6th. I will have a scaffold my mentor provides me to give me a basic idea of what we need.

Tuesday Nov. 8th
I continued to work on my project today, mostly brainstorming ideas and deciding which ones i would put into the book. The model I had was very helpful, but I wanted to put things more into my own words. I had a hard time in the beginning mostly because I became bored and tired of the work I had to do. It is a big project, though I still think it will be a big accomplishment once it is all together and set. I have gotten a very big part of my project done, mostly including the brainstorm and starting to type. I believe I will be done with my project before the time for me to present is here.

The job i am holding is a stretch from what I normally see as leadership skills. Since I have a job involving a lot of people, I am using these skills to work as a marketer or a psychologist. The listed skills should be and are used an amazing amount of the time: think critically, complete projects effectively, collaborate productively, and communicate strongly. Talking and interacting will ALWAYS involve thinking critically and communication because you need to understand who your audience is and try to convey what you are telling to them in a strong tone.  Ever part of my working environment is different and can use all the skills or only one of them so you have to be well-rounded to succeed. If these skills are not used, you could possibly lose a customer or gain bad favor with clients and a very unhappy boss/mentor. Communication will truly be the king at this workplace, since all of the work ties into how well you can talk to people. My mentor is great at all of these different skills; he holds a very big part of the business and the school. Being able to handle over six-hundred students coming in and out of the dojang every day requires a cool head and patience.

Tuesday Nov. 22nd
Working at Choi's Martial Arts has shown me what I can do and accomplish in a workplace. I find that i am more able to work with others in my office space and that we collaborate well. I thought that I was always a quiet person that could not talk to people about what they need. Since I was able to perfect these skills, I felt very useful and helpful and it showed I had the ability to work with my surroundings and bend them to my will. We did not experience a lot of difficulties and rarely had disputes when it came to work. Everyone was always very calm and we had well planned out communication and problem solving skills. My experience was generally something that made me feel accomplished. I had a good impact on me that empowers me to want to work and help people at my internship that need my assistance. I think many people will find my internship to be fast and exciting, while it is actually pretty relaxed and slow for the most part. There isn't anything that makes the day stressful because nothing comes out of nowhere to hit me in the face (besides the odd roundhouse kick). I loved seeing kids grow and make progress as well as helping keep the school and its events running. This will help me in the future, giving me ideas for how to understand and better communicate with others of different age groups.

I was delighted to the fact that I was able to work here, just because I had a grasp about what I would be doing as an intern and how to work here. I never knew how much the people here put effort into their work, or how much of a significance it had on the school. The people are ones that I hope to have around me for awhile because they were all so helpful while I was working. It is useful to build relationship with people you know, who knows, they may just be able to find you a job you are looking for. It also helps to know how to look for yourself, to secure your profession through various methods. Professionalism means to have a strong status in your workplace and be known as a mature individual. People will judge you from how they observe you in an environment so you must be careful about how you carry yourself.

Tuesday Dec. 6th
Today I helped with my usual tasks of filing, helping students and parents and working on my project. My project was basically done by this day, but I sent it to my mentor for further evaluation. I enjoyed working with students when I was on the mat today, but filing paperwork for belt tests, registration and inventory is never fun. These things are necessary to keep the school running however, so I had no problem helping. I feel like I have grown as an intern and made myself well know to be a helpful person. I would like anyone who needs my help there to ask me if they need it. The people there was what made my workplace wonderful. Everyone was extremely nice and helped me when I needed it, so I want to return the favor.

Tuesday Dec. 13th
I am glad that WLE is finally over. It showed me that it takes A LOT of work to keep the school running and up to date. This experience is pushing me to find another internship next year where I can talk to people more. I like the fact that I could communicate with many age groups. This made the experience fun and encouraged me to want to do more at the school.
